World Breastfeeding Week

We want you to join us to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week! As of right now, the tentative plan is to have a community-wide free barbecue on Saturday August 9th, 2008 at 2pm. We will have hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks for free, along with any side items we gain by the "potluck style" we're planning. We are looking into Lincoln Park as a possible venue, but that is not secure yet.

Activities will include raffle tickets (going on sale in advance and at the event) with the drawing being held at the barbecue for $100 cash. 50% of the proceeds will go to La Leche League International and the remaining 50% will go to fund our local group by providing materials for our library and pamphlets for the community. We will have activities for the kids and small prizes for them as well. We really hope you'll join us. If you have any questions, would like to donate a side dish or any supplies, email La Leche League of Frontenac.

More information to come as things progress.

Any cash donations are tax deductible and we will give you a receipt!

Welcome To La Leche of Frontenac!

What is La Leche League of Frontenac? We're a local mother-to-mother breastfeeding support group through La Leche League International in the Pittsburg/Frontenac, Kansas area. Our meetings include fellowship and support led by our accredited La Leche League Leader Tabitha. We have a great group of core members who can share their personal experience to new moms and moms to be. We also provide information to any medical personnel that are interested.

LLLI was founded in the 1950s by a group of women who chose to breastfeed their children at a time when breastfeeding was considered taboo or even unheard of. The group kept growing and more and more women were seeking help aside from their doctors about how to breastfeed and what to do when problems arose. Many times, it was just a group where moms could turn for support when breastfeeding wasn't encouraged, sometimes even frowned upon.

We abide by LLLI's Philosophies:
-Mothering through breastfeeding is the most natural and effective way of understanding and satisfying the needs of the baby.

-Mother and baby need to be together early and often to establish a satisfying relationship and an adequate milk supply.

-In the early years the baby has an intense need to be with his mother which is as basic as his need for food.

-Breast milk is the superior infant food.

-For the healthy, full-term baby, breast milk is the only food necessary until the baby shows signs of needing solids, about the middle of the first year after birth.

-Ideally the breastfeeding relationship will continue until the baby outgrows the need.

-Alert and active participation by the mother in childbirth is a help in getting breastfeeding off to a good start.

-Breastfeeding is enhanced and the nursing couple sustained by the loving support, help, and companionship of the baby's father. A father's unique relationship with his baby is an important element in the child's development from early infancy.

-Good nutrition means eating a well-balanced and varied diet of foods in as close to their natural state as possible.

-From infancy on, children need loving guidance which reflects acceptance of their capabilities and sensitivity to their feelings.

Our meetings are held the first Thursday of every month at 6:00pm and the third Tuesday of every month at 10:00am. We find this schedule can accommodate both working moms and stay at home moms! Our meetings are at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church's Preschool building. You are welcome to call Tabitha 620-249-5431 or Charlea 417-830-8997 for directions. Some weeks, we can arrange for transportation for moms lacking a way to the meetings.

Aside from monthly meetings, our leader can also provide mother-to-mother personal support with LLLI's constantly updated breastfeeding information. No matter what the problem, we can find the information to help you. Telephone support and in-home visits are available. If you are more comfortable, we can also arrange a neutral meeting place to provide any help you may need. For mother to mother support, contact Tabitha by email (link) or phone: 620-249-5431.

If you have a question about our group or are interested in attending meetings or attaining information, contact La Leche League of Frontenac.
